The BookViral Review:

A delightful tale-guaranteed to please every young reader-Stanley the Pencil is an illustrated children’s book about exploration and adventure, of pushing past boundaries to discover new experiences and hidden talents. J. L. Manning does a sterling job of bringing Stanley to life as he ponders over the world beyond from inside his small pencil case. Despite having other pencil friends, Ernie, Samantha, and Max, who live with him, Stanley longs for something more. Eventually, his curiosity gets the better of him, and he leaves the confines of his small life for the adventures of the big town beyond.

Freshly sharpened, Stanley enjoys a scavenger hunt which takes him to the train station, the park, the beach, and even the forest. This illustrated children’s book about exploration and adventure showcases Manning’s artistry, displaying a wonderful eye for detail as she provides a plethora of elements for her reader to observe and for carers to discuss with their young charges, from bright and colourful characters in the foreground to the city skyline beyond.

Manning guides her audience to wholesome and invigorating activities through Stanley’s choices, as he enjoys all that nature has to offer in the fresh clean air, and displays a hands-on and friendly attitude in his approach to life. After exploring the town and surrounding areas and making new friends, Stanley shows his remarkable abilities in a talent show. He is spotted by a local artist, who develops his skills and introduces him to the wider world of art, where Stanley is obviously impressed by the Mona Lisa. This illustrated children’s book about exploration and adventure brings Stanley to life from an inanimate pencil to a well-loved character through his facial expressions, larger-than-life hands, and ‘dream bubbles’ which express his thoughts perfectly.

It is encouraging to see the use of sophisticated language in this tale, despite the storyline being designed for the fairly young reader. By introducing more complex terminology, Manning creates the opportunity for growth in both language acquisition and cultural capital, equipping her young reader well for a life of literary exploration and imagination. A lovely tale, suitable from pre-school to throughout elementary.

Rivera’s commentary is as accurate as it is nostalgic, with fascinating attention to detail as he re-creates a time before mobile phone and computers, where blackboards and paper displays were the order of the day, and kids were kids.
