The BookViral Review:

To not read Water Thicker Than Blood is to cheat yourself of a memorable read with Saundra Terrell bringing her usual intuitive affinity to a story that will tear at the heart. It is a read of social observations, moods and tones of voice, atmosphere and deep feeling underpinned by a narrative that is verbally smart and the various contrivances and tangles of its plot are cleverly played out. Provoking much in the way of reflection on the separation between societal expectations and the race-defined self. Stories of resilience and love in Black families just don’t get any better than this.

With wonderfully illuminating backstories for her main characters, this is nonetheless the story of Johnny Mae. A child lost in her inescapable tribulations and how kind hands find her and give her a new life. It’s a mesmerizing story that reminds us where humanity can go wrong and when it can come to our rescue. Yes, it tells a story in a conventional sense but Terrell excels when it comes to conveying feelings and here she is at her best so that we understand her story not just in an intellectual way, but in an emotional way too.

It’s a vivid portrait not only of time and place but the spirit of Terrell’s main characters, Grandma Martha, Ma Pearl, and Johnny Mae, and is gloriously textured with its bitter roots in slavery and hardship whilst being a lyrical meditation on the spiritual resilience of the generations of negro women who have prevailed against the odds. Water Thicker Than Blood integrates the themes of ‘inspirational stories of Black women in America’, ‘generational sagas about American Black families’, and ‘heartwarming stories of resilience and family ties’, making it not just a conventional story but a deep, resonant social commentary.

Terrell’s narrative coils through past and present, through memory and feelings, giving us shards of events that she pieces together. Water Thicker Than Blood has most of the clichés we expect—but they play out perfectly. There’s childhood poverty, the complexities of love, the unhappy early sexual experiences, the big break, … we know the scenes by heart and yet Terrell makes them fresh and feel overwhelmingly authentic with its messaging about sisterhood, determination, and self-belief.”

With wonderful plot elements and superb characters, “Water Thicker Than Blood” is a novel you will not only enjoy immensely but want to talk about! A novel with broad appeal it is particularly recommended to readers who love stories of resilience and love in Black families and is an unreservedly recommended Golden Quill read!

Firing on all cylinders as a crime thriller and police procedural there’s something elemental about Brenham’s writing that proves wholly riveting. Once Upon A Crime lunges for our collective viscera in its opening sequence and never lets go.
