The BookViral Review:
A heart wrenching first love drama, A Tangled Web proves a welcome change from the deluge of paranormal offerings that seem to dominate YA Romantic Fiction. In Red Days, Sparrow’s Eco-Fiction novel, the success of her narrative hinged on her characters and here she brings a refreshing ordinariness to them. With knuckle-down attention, she creates plausible and involving relationship dynamics between Taiyo, Ryuu and Kairi. We quickly come to care about and feel for them because they are so relatable and in this way, they are rightly liberated from the plot’s destiny. We’re reminded how confusing love can be but in a modestly scaled narrative, Sparrow delivers a beguiling blend of moving and affecting moments. Yes, we know from the start where she is leading us, we know the tragedy that awaits, but whilst another author might have opted for a more saccharin denouement Sparrow plays it straight. The Japanese Tsunami of 2011 was a terrifying event but Sparrow includes it not for sensation but to remind us how fragile life is and on this level, her bittersweet ending is perfectly pitched.
A beautifully written offbeat romance for discerning readers of all ages, A Tangled Web proves a gem of a novel from Sparrow and is recommended without reservation.
