The BookViral Review:

A whimsical fantasy bound by human relationships, adventures and desires, ‘Tiger-wolf’, by Brien Cole, plays with time and space as fact blurs with fiction and the world expands and shrinks in response to both past and present.

As Nat Klein, a young emerging inventor and cartoon artist crafts his ‘Green Avenger’ comic strip, his Uncle Eugene clears a long disused room in the family home working through the historical artifacts bound up with distant family adventures. Nat’s interest is piqued by ‘fraudulent’ sightings of the Thylacine alpine (Tiger-wolf), and together with his new-disquietingly female- companion, Rosalind, a scientifically minded serious young woman, muscle in on a new museum exhibition Eugene is creating and embark on an adventure they could never have dreamed of.

From small starts, an explosion of creative thinking results in more than could be imagined. The exhibition widens and deepens; the imaginations of those involved blending reality with illusion as the whims and beliefs of the characters take on a life and meaning of their own, whilst the elusive tiger-wolf remains just out of arms reach, conjured up in minds and slipping through fingers like an elusive ghost.

Cole gently introduces readers to ecological issues as her protagonists track the fate of the tiger wolves and their disappearance into the faded annals of history, and relentlessly chase a dream of revival.

Nevertheless, despite the huge storyline, Cole pays attention to the tiniest detail, exposing the innermost thoughts of her characters through achingly tender and sexually explorative moments as they negotiate increasingly intimate relationships, both those which unfurl in the first bloom of youth and those reignited in the breasts of those long-worn by life or held in the clutch of previous tragic love stories.

Beautifully written, with an evocative and wistful delivery, Tiger-wolf is a 5-star and firmly recommended.
