The BookViral Review:

With a raw and brutal portrayal of addiction and detox, Dianne Corbeau takes us through her own personal hell in a fascinating inside account of getting clean.

However, what is exceptional about this book is Corbeau’s efficiency in conveying the juxtaposition between her bodily and mental needs-that of craving the quick-fix, as opposed to the need to survive and get well. Her somewhat raw prose encapsulates and exposes her fractured thoughts and confusion throughout six days of detox, and how her determination grew at specific points throughout the process, sometimes in response to her negative micro-environment, and at other times supported through friends, acquaintances and her own inbuilt desire to conquer her nemesis.

Throughout her narrative, Corbeau highlights the vulnerabilities of individuals with mental health challenges, the delicate balance of life which can be knocked off course by tragic events outside of their control, and the very real risks connected with mishandling which leave them open to the devastating consequences of self-management with drugs and drink.

Her critical view of care staff is a conversation seen on many news and social media platforms and emphasises the delicate balance between tough love and critical care, and the need to treat each human with respect, despite their having abused their own bodies in terrible ways, along with retaining an understanding of circumstances which lead an individual to their eventual desperate situation.

An unadulterated insight into addiction and recovery, ‘Six Days in Detox’ is eye-opening and unapologetic and perhaps not for the faint-hearted, but serves as a silent warning for those who may find themselves drawn towards a path of self-medication.
