The BookViral Review:

At a time when A.I. theories, in their relentlessness, seem almost to relish the existential threat of AI to the human race Silicon Minds: Tales From The Frontiers Of Artificial Intelligence grapples with provocative existential concepts in similarly thoughtful terms.

Touching on philosophy, socio-ethics and humanity’s uneasily symbiotic relationship with technology Nate Monroe taps into our existential fears with foresight to keep us reflecting long after the last page is turned.

There are three story arcs in all and each one has a prologue which sets the scene. This ensures the moral conundrums never seem too heavy-handed and their technological razzle-dazzle remains within the bounds of possibility given the ever-accelerating progress of AI and its current integration into the way we live.

Over the cumulative arc of his stories, Monroe exposes the insecurity of the human ego by showing our lust for creation as simply another strand in the pursuit of wealth and control, manifested in the Global Digital Corporation (GDC), whilst serving up an intriguing panoply of questions, answers and ideas which are assembled into neat thematic combinations.

The character arcs, as you would expect from short stories, are truncated and yet they are a deliberate ensemble who trade off each other rather than grandstand as Monroe takes us into alternative realities with E.D.E.N. which questions the nature of reality, the ethics of technology and human existence whilst The D.A.W.N explores the inherent dangers of advancements in A.I., biotechnology, nanotechnology and quantum computing. But perhaps the most disturbing of Monroe’s stories is that of A.D.A.M. and E.V.E. with his vision of an artificially designed autonomous mind and its evolution into a sentient augmented machine with free will and independent from data sources as we find ourselves hurtling towards nuclear Armageddon.

Overall an intriguing release from Nate Monroe and one that will certainly appeal to readers who take an active interest in AI’s geo-socio implications Silicon Minds: Tales From The Frontiers Of Artificial Intelligence will leave you deep in thought.
