The BookViral Review:

An absorbing and highly original First Contact Science Fiction novel Dean K. Hutchins gives us a full on science fiction thriller that is powerful in its premise and enthralling in its intrigue.

A big novel in terms of its many rich characters and the size of its vision Hutchins isn’t an author to give us mindless action that’s thrown together with staccato dialogue to disguise a lack of depth. First Contact Science Fiction is a genre where familiarity has become endemic with far too many authors seemingly content to regurgitate stale genre tropes and it’s refreshing to find a genuinely different read.

If The Trojan Asteroid had solely been about the action it might have quickly lost its appeal and Hutchins avoids this by giving us characters who matter. There’s no corny dialogue or creaky plot threads and he’s given careful thought to the mechanics of survival as he drills down into the psyche of his characters.

With reluctant Vice President of the United States Benjamin Owens at the forefront, Hutchins’ characters are well-nuanced and multi-layered. The contact scenes with the Og’elera’ew are succinctly crafted without being repetitious and unlikely to be like anything you have come across before.

Yes, the familiar genre tropes are evident but he never allows them to spiral into unearned sentiment whilst Hutchin’s masterstroke is the hive mentality of the Og’elera’ew as they struggle with the implications and consequences of invading human hosts and our social anthropology. But as is most often the case with Science Fiction offerings, it’s the journey that matters more than the destination and it’s certainly true of The Trojan Asteroid where evolving events are far from predictable and lead to unexpected opportunities.

With its crisp, taut and involving plot The Trojan Asteroid proves a genuinely original page-turner and one that leaves us with the promise of more to come. A five-star read it is unreservedly recommended!
