The BookViral Review:

An exceptional achievement in graphic storytelling Olmos and Nichols have created a powerful and absorbing murder mystery where the intrigue is more unsettling than it first appears.

Quiet often with graphic storytelling the overall package is diminished by the clash between plot and illustrative style but Olmos and Nichols have struck the perfect balance.

Nichols, now sadly passed, brings out the humanity of the characters and their situation. His illustration style is well suited to Olmos’ prose whilst the faces of his caricatures are emotionally rich, leaving the reader in little doubt as to what’s going through their minds.

Likewise, the backdrops are beautifully illustrated and wonderfully creative, to deliver a genuine sense of presence that gels flawlessly with Olmos’ plot. A plot that is taut without the frustration of infuriating loose threads whilst the dialogue between the characters is always sharp and authentic. Not only capturing the progression of its characters but tempering Olmos’ narrative with a timely injection of humour which cleverly reflects the era in which Sonora Pass is set.

An extraordinarily accomplished debut, intelligent and beautifully executed, Sonora Pass is a showcase for what graphic novels can deliver when narrative and illustration style are in sync. A must-read for fans of the medium and murder mysteries it is recommended without reservation!
