The BookViral Review:
As J. D. Isaly points out in his introduction, “we in the developed world, have come to take a lot for granted” and we are living in a world “where our fruit and vegetables now contain 40% fewer nutrients than they did in the 1940s. It’s a sobering thought but it’s one that remains prevalent throughout Black Thumb Greenhouse as Isaly introduces us to an alternative way of living.
Not only a pleasure to dip into but also one of the few guidebooks that can be read cover to cover and feel genuinely enlightening Isaly begins with a succinct introduction and continues with a minimum of fuss.
He is a vivid and insightful writer which is evident here with a consummate combination of in-depth knowledge and penetrating insight. Not only clearly articulating the material benefits of a greenhouse but the physiological ones too before taking a comprehensive look at the types of greenhouses available.
To the novice gardener considering the purchase of a greenhouse the detail imparted in these opening chapters will prove invaluable and may well help to avert costly mistakes. But for Isaly a greenhouse extends far beyond its practical uses.
In the words of Teo Spengler, who Isaly quotes, a greenhouse “creates a very special place that, to me, represents gardening at its most magical.” With the extent of that magic no more evident than in chapters 6 and 7 as Isaly discusses Heirloom seeds, fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants that will bring a greenhouse to life.
With get ahead tips and advice on how to best organize the space available in even the smallest of greenhouses Isaly’s book proves an indispensable guide for all gardeners’ and is highly recommended.
