The BookViral Review:
Browse the bookshelves and you will find a mixed bag of memoirs. Unfortunately, the quality and content of many fall far short of their promises and it’s often difficult to find those that add any real value, but The Journey by Jess Sweely quickly establishes its credentials.
Making a company efficient means making it more secure, solid and profitable. Being efficient means producing with fewer resources, thereby increasing margins and here Sweely’s memoir certainly drills down into the detail of many impressive achievements. We are also reminded of the way computers have shaped and continue to shape the corporate landscape. Particularly when he recalls 1967 when there were no personal computers, no planning software and accounting still used accounting worksheets!
Sweely’s journey is one that’s spanned decades of profound change and technological growth with Sweely quick to embrace the first and adopt the latter. A corporate journey through the upper echelons of aviation and defence to setting up a successful real estate business, a Medicaid managed care business, the creation of a winery and the “Sweely Family Foundation”. But it’s a journey that wouldn’t have been possible if not for the support of his wife Sharon. And through his candour, we come to understand the kind of psychology he is hard-wired with and how it has enabled him to get to the point he is today.
People with a resilient mindsets like Sweely see challenges as opportunities to learn new things, not a moment of failure and in reading The Journey we are reminded that being resilient means carrying an awareness of our strengths as well as our weaknesses and learning from them.
A book to carry around with you and be reminded of what’s achievable when you build strong relationships and persevere in pursuit of your goals The Journey is highly recommended.
