The BookViral Review:

Amongst the plethora of pre-teen garish, silly and temporarily amusing books out there, it is hard to find a gem.

This is one.

Kathleen. W . Franks has managed to capture an age old magical narrative; the kind that transports its young reader into the realms of their own imagination, complete with secret tunnels, magical creatures and a good old baddie or two!

Right from the off the mystery begins as Franks firmly hooks her readers with strong relatable characters and a gripping plot, with the shape of the novel growing and shifting naturally from her protagonist’s very first experience at his new home.

After a surprise inheritance, Danial and his family move into an impressive but unkempt house in the Country. Danial is less than pleased to be leaving his old neighbourhood and his parents are daunted at the prospect of caring for such a large estate. When two shady American businessmen turn up on the doorstep, it seems their financial worries are over, but Danial realises the price for security and holidays to Disneyland is far too high.

Danial’s distinctive voice, as he tries to protect the magical natural world he has discovered from being destroyed by the fracking plans of the two dastardly and manipulative Americans, is honest and engaging as he fights for what he knows to be right, despite the hindrance of his parents refusing to believe in his ‘invisible’ magical friends. Here, Franks cleverly taps into the internal conflict of the pre-teen experience by capturing the perspective of Danial beautifully as he feels the frustration of obedience and compliance, and the new and overwhelming realisation of responsibility.

Frank’s sophisticated language may be a little challenging for some of her young readers; however, this can be seen as a welcome opportunity to expand vocabulary and grasp complex concepts. Furthermore, despite its magical genre, Franks doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects, encouraging young people to think about societal issues and difficult decisions. However, this is not presented in a preachy or dogmatic style but embedded into a plot which still successfully holds bygone innocence and offers a thoroughly enjoyable read.

A lovely twist at the end completes the circular narrative as history repeats itself and the old and young find kinship in a shared purpose. The Mysterious Secret Of Frankly Woods is firmly recommended for competent young readers.
