The BookViral Review:
If Christian Mystery & Suspense is to be convincing it has to feel plausible and yet far too many releases in the genre skimp on serious religious feeling in favour of shock and gore. Refreshingly The Inimical gives us both with an atmospheric and evocative read which is not only original but gives us characters we can believe in.
A vivid and insightful author JLR has an acerbic eye for the pressures and poignancies of his characters which combined with his ability to craft an edgy and intriguing plot rapidly draws his readers in.
The Inimical isn’t particularly long at just under 200 pages but everything JLR writes is focused and it’s rare to find extraneous detail that doesn’t move his narrative forward as he manipulates the usual genre trappings of heightened tension, things that go bump in the dark and eye-popping gore. These reasons alone are enough to pick up a copy of The Inimical and start reading but it’s the unexpectedly artful touches JLR effectively adds that elevate his story above the genre norm.
He’s trying to give us something different and it comes in the form of Eli. A character who doesn’t fit neatly into the established genre stereotype and avoids smug clichés as he takes us to places no one wants to go whilst the horrifying murder of his wife and daughter at the hands of Benny introduce a level of vulnerability that makes him highly endearing. His story isn’t for the faint-hearted and the events that subsequently transpire will require your full concentration to fully absorb the prevailing essence of evil he must repeatedly face.
A recommended read to fans of Christian Mystery & Suspense. Make yourself comfortable, but keep your finger on the light switch as you temporarily draw back the veil that separates us from an evil that stalks us all!
