The BookViral Review:
Dr Sean Nolan is back and again leading his eccentric double life as he finds himself drawn into the shadier side of big pharma.
An elegantly coiled puzzler that spins a tale of PTSD and pharmaceutical malpractice E. W. Johnson M.D. weaves absorbing plot threads into the cunningly unpredictable that like his previous release, Virulence, observes how the shadier subsets of society operate in a needy, greedy, paranoid and duplicitous age.
At its centre is investigative journalist ABCDE who Nolan first met in Virulence and through her, Johnson is able to build nail-biting suspense as she investigates a raft of suicides seemingly related to a new drug called Serenetine.
As Johnson’s narrative progresses the chapters seem filled with a frenetic intensity as the conspiratorial tones grow ever darker and the lengths to which Villarian Pharmaceuticals will go to keep their secret safe become increasingly desperate.
One of the pleasures of Johnson’s Dr Sean Nolan Mystery series is the strength and continuity of its characters, the other is Johnson’s ability to keep plots grounded in real-world issues or events.
History tells us that the adverse effects of new medicines have repeatedly been hidden in trial data but Johnson adds an added layer of suspense as Nolan’s investigation and the subsequent kidnapping of ABCDE evolve in line with the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in America.
And with Nolan once again reaching out to his contacts in the NSA and CDC along with the welcome return of Eileen, Sheriff Dent, Jed Cuatro and Avery the conspiratorial tone is maintained throughout
Intriguing, never boring or lacking, Coitioned proves a riveting 5 star read. Sure to meet with approval from fans of the series it is unreservedly recommended!
