A novel whose every chapter pulsates with the desire to be a transportive, immersive work of Epic Fantasy fiction Season Of The Dragon proves a superb start to Natalie Wright’s Dragos Primeri series.

Told in sumptuously gritty imagery, this epic feat of bold imagination has all of the classic pieces of Epic Fantasy Fiction: stalwart warriors, heavy-hooved beasts, Dragons, love, mysticism and staggering odds with layered storytelling that creates a bold and beautiful Fantasy world underpinned by a cleverly constructed system of magic. And it’s a testimony to the quality of Wright’s writing and ability to create highly vivid immersive scenes that we willingly go along with Quen’s story.

The problem with far too many Epic Fantasy novels is that they feel naggingly derivative and it’s a credit to Wright that Season Of The Dragon doesn’t follow suit. Dancing on a razor’s edge between Quen’s quest for vengeance, sequences of primal terror and desire Season Of The Dragon casts a strange spell that is altogether seductive and special whilst the power of Wright’s work here is in her ability to filter many prevailing genre influences into a singular vision that feels entirely original.

The scenes involving the Summer Dragon Vahgrin and the Winter Dragon Ishna are first-rate. They are beautifully described and when they breathe their fire and ice Wright’s descriptions fully convey their majesty and power to linger in the mind’s eye. But it’s Quen’s bond to Ishna and her eventual transformation that ultimately takes the accolades.

Wright isn’t quick to reveal the ultimate nature of their bond but amidst the dark revelations of the final chapters, where a cruel and bitter undertone runs through, she takes us on a rollercoaster of mystical treachery and manipulations which is nothing short of superb.

An absolute treasure of an Epic Fantasy novel and unreservedly recommended to fans of the genre Season Of The Dragon is a Golden Quill read.
