The BookViral Review:

Some novels become classics simply because they’re from a bygone era, others deserve to be called classics because, in addition to being of literary merit, they tell us something about a bygone era. The second book in Stevens’ Sam Bott’s Adventures series The Twisted Green Road Gold Ring is certainly one of the latter.

The strengths and foibles of human beings are what Stevens’ novel is all about, and his character Sam Bott is one of the most vividly etched male characters you will come across in a novel. In telling his story Stevens manages the difficult feat of narrating an intimate, even delicate story with an appealingly light touch against a sweeping backdrop as Sam takes to the road.

With a remarkable balance of sentimentality, resilience and determination Sam is quick to learn and eager to excel and approaches each new endeavour with honesty and niceness as his shields. And yet The Twisted Green Road Gold Ring is not some saccharin-laced story about an uncomplicated teenager on the cusp of manhood. He is simply someone who lacks cynicism and takes things for exactly what they are and on this level, Sam’s story is rich in quiet truths

Stevens’ idea to set Sam on a road journey is inventive. From the friends he makes along the way, the fleeting dalliances and life-changing decisions that will shape his latter years there is a poignant integrity that blossoms throughout.

Underpinned by social commentary Stevens captures the mood of the moment as we come to know the characters he’s created beyond a state of casual detachment.

Sometimes harrowing, sometimes heart-wrenchingly sad, but always emotionally charged he achieves a notable level of intimacy with his readers through his unwavering ability to look to the past and transition the influences of the time to the story he’s telling without lessening them.

Original in thought and execution The Twisted Green Road Gold Ring proves a superb read.
