The BookViral Review:

A novel about falling in love and looking back on the choices we make, Dropping Perez is the new novel by Maria Rivera and it proves a genuine treasure of a read. Comfortably managing to avoid the genre’s many syrupy pitfalls it’s a story so sincere and positive that it quickly sneaks past our defences with a second chance romance built on Christian values and respect.

Like her previous releases, Chasing Shadows and Chasing The Wind, Dropping Perez isn’t one of those disposable novels with a shelf life as short as its reader’s attention span. At the centre of Dropping Perez are the key protagonists Maritza and Ariel. Maritza is a woman who has been cheated on by husband Gil who then leaves her for the younger woman and Ariel is a man who cheated on his wife but has found redemption.

The theme of adultery has been used in a wide range of literature through the ages and has served as a theme for many notable novels. In Dropping Perez it brings intense emotions to the foreground and it automatically creates a sense of conflict between the characters concerned.

The importance of family in the Christian faith is a recurring theme in Rivera’s novels. She uses carefully selected scriptural texts to explore this and there is real craft and sincerity behind her prose. Both narratively and stylistically she creates meaningful conflict, believable characters, style and emotional honesty that brings her characters to life. This is underpinned by Rivera’s attention to the small details. Close your eyes and you can smell ropa vieja, boliche, rice, black beans and the distinct aroma of Cuban coffee with it’s chocolate and nutty notes, complemented by overtones of tobacco.

As Dropping Perez progresses we never get the feeling that Maritza and Ariel are trapped in the cycle of fake melodrama and brainless coincidences that sadly litter the genre. The plot proves refreshingly authentic as she comes to forgive her former husband Gil and we are kept on tenterhooks as her second chance relationship with Ariel continues to blossom.

At fifty eight Maritza’s one vice is old age! She isn’t a stereotypical character who wears her angst on her sleeve. Her self-esteem keeps her centred. She’s smart and selfless. A reminder that one of the pleasures of reading a novel like Dropping Perez is restoring our faith in people who uphold Christian values and genuinely care about each other.

With an epilogue hinting at more to come Dropping Perez proves and a must-read for fans of Christian romantic fiction. It is recommended without reservation.
