The BookViral Review:

A smart, suspenseful and satisfyingly unpredictable novel about the power of love and redemption The Cost Of Living proves an absorbing read. Comfortably managing to avoid the genre’s many saccharin pitfalls to give us a story that quickly darkens and morphs in the imagination.

From a narrative perspective, DeMay creates meaningful and believable characters, with the requisite degree of emotional honesty to bring them to life whilst it’s her attention to detail that makes them feel authentic as she captures the haunting textures of her post-apocalyptic setting.

Sara, despite the tragedy in her life, isn’t a stereotypical character who wears her angst on her sleeve. She’s tough and resourceful as she comes to terms with the tragic deaths of her children and the dark reality of a new world but still retains a degree of vulnerability which makes us warm to her.

Despite her abusive past and the death that surrounds her, Sara remains hopeful of a better future and her relationships with Sam and Adam allow DeMay to explore the themes of courage and resilience whilst maintaining the vital sense of mystery that surrounds them.

This is particularly true of Sara’s interactions with Adam and here DeMay’s plot proves refreshingly unpredictable as Sara finds herself juggling her burgeoning romances whilst we’re kept on tenterhooks as she tries to figure out the right direction to take. There’s more than enough originality and emotional weight to DeMay’s narrative to keep us engrossed throughout without resorting to lump-in-the-throat histrionics whilst a clever and unpredictable plot twist involving Sam makes The Cost Of Living a beguiling and heart-wrenching read in more ways than one.

An immersive page-turner that will have you hooked from the start The Cost Of Living is highly recommended.
