The BookViral Review:
It seems a failing of the genre that far too often the atmosphere of a novel is layered to the point where it becomes ponderous and impenetrable, but in developing his narrative for Demented Clark demonstrates an unerring understanding of what will unsettle his readers. And here he uses sex as a device for revealing the state of society; a way of revealing truths about characters that they themselves may not be able to see.
Quick to build momentum Demented is fascinating: erotic, intense, in parts repellent, frequently pornographic but Clark’s prose is measured, insightful and polarising, taking us to the crux of his characters. This allows for the obligatory tension and suspense, which is the backbone of the genre without resorting to trite tropes and weary clichés which is particularly refreshing.
With an array of eclectic characters, he leaves us in no doubt that although a young woman may act improperly, even recklessly, she still should have the right to say “no” and be heard. But he also leaves room for acts of humanity and compassion and it’s this contrast that will linger in the minds of many readers.
Weaving an imaginative and richly layered plot that is flawless in its execution, Demented proves immediately engaging and a genuine page-turner from the start. Boding well for future releases from Clark and is recommended without reservation.
