The BookViral Review:
Readers looking for a novel that tackles the complicated subject of adoption from a legal and ethical perspective without losing sight of the human element, When Forever Breaks is definitely the novel to read!
It’s not a novel driven by suspense, though there’s plenty of it, instead, its energy comes from its vividly realized characters, from how they relate to and ultimately perceive one another.
Callahan has a finely tuned ear for dialogue, especially childhood speak, and once again she displays a consummate ability to summon a wealth of hopes and fears to create a powerful and emotional connection that elicits much in the way of empathy.
Laden with poignant moments and underpinned by a plot that never loses sight of its theme Callahan’s most impressive achievement in When Forever Breaks is not only to tell a great story but to strip away unnecessary courtroom complexity whilst leaving a narrative that is still convincing and always makes sense.
Writing in any genre has its pitfalls but one of the challenges of writing a novel in the Family Fiction genre is knowing what emotions and patterns are expected whilst finding original ways to deliver them and Callahan achieves this with ease. She’s patient with her narrative allowing scenes to play out until a point is made yet never to the detriment of suspense as she explores events from Kips, Jennifer’s and Steve’s perspectives.
On this level When Forever Breaks is both stylish and provocative and whilst dark at times this grows out of the lives of her characters. There are no clichés or interchangeable characters here. Beyond Kip, Jennifer and Steve all Callahan’s characters earn their place and bring additional depth to Kip’s story who himself has a wide-eyed likeability that keeps us rooting for him.
A powerful and engrossing novel from beginning to end, When Forever Breaks proves a must-read for discerning fans of Family Fiction and is strongly recommended.
