The BookViral Review:

Jeanne Ward interweaves three very different generations in her engrossing biographical book, ‘This Man Called Bunk’.  Intensely curious about her Grandfather – affectionally named ‘Bunk’ – from a young age, Ward sets out on her own personal journey to solve a mystery – why he deserted her vivacious and attractive Grandmother, ‘Mus’ and their young children.

Ward describes a very happy childhood, spending much time with her extended family, enjoying their differences, and forging a close relationship with her father. However, as she grew, she realised something was missing-her Father’s Father. She soon realised that her Grandmother’s glowing perception of him differed from that of her Father and his siblings, whose reluctance to talk about him fired her curiosity.

This absorbing part biographical, part creative story, tracks the life of Bunk, told through the eyes of the author and by proxy, those of his adoring wife, Mus. Through painstaking research, Ward builds not only a picture of his life, but also of his characteristics and motivations; his impulsiveness; his dreams; his strength of belief in romance and the weaknesses of his personality, and the loyalty throughout of his childhood sweetheart.

Through her unswerving investigation of his lifespan, Ward reveals a mirror into her own upbringing, as his decisions weave an influence on her family and her own childhood.

She brings to life the flamboyant Mus, and her family, who outshine-but do not outdo- the rather more conservative but loving family on her mother’s side, along with experiences reminiscent of many from the time of her youth, creating a fascinating look into mid- 20th century history.

Delivered with an easy and relaxed narrative, Ward transports you effortlessly into the world of her childhood, where her characters leap from the page; some timid, some ‘proper’, and some larger than life, and the smells, sights, and atmosphere of each location craft a timeless imagery.

Ward keeps her readers hooked with a two-part delivery as each life impacts inevitably on the next. A moving and captivating read with accompanying heartfelt poetry This Man Called Bunk is certainly  recommended.
