The BookViral Review:

With so many Young Adult Fantasy novels to choose from it’s really quite hard to sort the wheat from the chaff, but Hannah-Louise smith has created something rather intriguing. An engrossing mix of atmospheric Young Adult Fantasy that’s cemented by intriguing mythology, terrific characters and a plot with plenty of momentum.

Far too many novels in the genre focus on action with not much room left for fleshed-out personalities or narrative depth which often leaves them feeling emotionally empty but Smith has a colourfully kinetic visual imagination that seldom lets up and it’s the depth she brings to her characters that makes Awakening a particularly enjoyable read.

With mythical creatures and diabolical baddies to spare, Awakening (book 1 mythics and mortals trilogy) is a novel that actually gets its hooks into you without ripping a host of pages from familiar best sellers in the genre. Even when the blood-and-thunder hokiness of Smith’s plot tilts perilously close to over the top her well-conceived cast of characters provides just enough counterbalance to sustain reader curiosity and sympathy.

Vibrating with energy you can sense the zeal and joy Smith had in its writing but of course, any series rises and falls on the strength of its characters and Christina Jones proves far from pedestrian. Add a little humour and an intriguing backstory and she has more than enough charisma to carry a series with broad appeal.

The beginning of a highly enjoyable series, Awakening (book 1 mythics and mortals trilogy) leaves us with a cliffhanger ending and is sure to be well received by fans of the ever-popular genre of Young Adult Fantasy. It is certainly recommended.

He excels at pitch-black comedy, is a master of wicked one-liners and as with The Omnipotent the relentless self-interest of Anderson’s central character, Treyton Templeton, spreads like a particularly vehement poison ivy into every aspect of his being.

See A Witch About A Curse certainly has all the ingredients required to pique the curiosity of its target audience but whereas most YA offerings omit (relatively) complex motifs and themes in favour of building tangible relationships between good-looking clothe horses, Hussain gets the balance just right.
