The BookViral Review:
A large growl shakes the very earth. It is not Man or Demon or the masters or creators of them but a Dragon, a Dragon most ancient…
A novel that embraces traditional action idiom whilst managing to be electrifyingly exciting Powter’s subsequent release to The Young proves every bit as good as his debut.
With far too many releases in the genre falling short of expectations, there’s a strong argument for some kind of moratorium being declared on the indiscriminate use of the term “Heroic Fantasy” but Powter gives us an inspired combination of seriousness and playfulness that reminds us what the genre is all about.
The best Heroic Fantasy novels give us epic battles and yet invariably the action takes second place to their protagonist’s values and desire for justice and this is something Powter articulates particularly well in the evolving dynamics between Antartigo and the Demonic Murdeecius as they battle the darkest offerings from the pits of Hell!
This brings a kind of fabular quality to Powter’s narrative, which not only makes it highly original but transcends the well-trodden line between good and evil as Antartigo and Murdeecius develop an unspoken bond that transcends his possession of her.
As with “The Young” readers will know they are in good hands with Powter, setting a mood that fully immerses the reader in his vividly imagined world, as he puts his easily distinguishable characters through their paces. This underpinned by a plot that catches you up in something bigger than yourself to remind us that the best Heroic Fantasy novels are something to be treasured.
A must-read for fans of Heroic Fantasy who appreciate originality The gauntlet of pong wu is a strongly recommended read!”
