Building on the success of his Dream Phaze series, Matt Watters brings his readers another fully believable futuristic adventure in ‘SkyRacers’.
In a world where competitive racing has moved to the skies, and equality of gender is the order of the day, sisters Aleeza and Olivia dominate the sport. Just as risky as track racing, and with even more diverse and complicated competition courses, each race is a daunting and dangerous undertaking. Add to that a critical fan base and the scrutiny of stakeholders, and the mixing pot is both physically and emotionally vicious and volatile.
Punchy, fast-paced and well-written, with an air of authenticity, Watters clearly knows his stuff, embedding technically plausible detail whilst creating an authentic world in which to place his characters.
Tension between the sisters keeps the reader engaged as they negotiate life on and off the track from differing perspectives; Aleeza, measured and sensible off track, but fierce in the cockpit, and Olivia, feisty and untameable, throwing caution to the wind in everything she does. As healthy rivalry spills over into private life, Watters exposes deeply hidden rifts which blossom into a fully-fledged feud, further complicated by fame, which greedily devours every detail and spits it out for the world to see.
Watters cleverly bends a typically ‘boys’ book, embracing all readers by throwing his plot wide to encompass the lives and loves of his characters, and dabbling with more feminine aspects of life as his characters move through the racing season. Keeping us hyped with a neck-to-neck leaderboard and fast-paced nail-biting race sequences, he has us totally enthralled and invested in a fantasy sport of the future, whilst convincing us of its reality.
