The BookViral Review:
A conceptually strong story from Catherine Douglas as she publishes her first offering, ‘White Raven’. In an interesting blend of fantasy with a historical context, Douglas presents an alternative reality of WW2, complete with SS officers and the Resistance. However, though a historically accurate thread runs through her adventure, mystical creatures abound, in particular the Conduras, who live among humankind but have the ability to control natural elements, such as ice and fire.
Leaving his long-time friend but newly discovered love, protagonist Jay Loalin, in a bid to emulate his Father’s heroism, accepts a dangerous assignment to rid the Nazis of terrible scientists hell-bent on manipulating Conduras powers to assist with their war effort. Douglas maintains a close parallel to real events as the horrific details of operation ‘White Raven’ come to light, with the use of the Conduras as guinea pigs for experimental purposes.
A plethora of contrasting characters engage the reader, as the fast-paced plot hotfoots around the globe, placing Jay in ever-increasingly complicated dangerous situations but conversely leading him into the path of loyal and decent characters from all mystical pathways, as he realises there can be good in all groups, including the hated Witches.
A tale of human (and mystical) nature in all its forms, ‘White Raven’ keeps you on the edge of your seat, drawing you into a fantastical but strangely familiar world, creating a fantasy setting which will no doubt be used time and time again for further exciting adventures. White Raven is certainly recommended to fans of Historical Fantasy Fiction.
