The BookViral Review:

If a horror novel is to be convincing it has to get into the reader’s mind yet far too many releases in the genre prove disappointing. So it’s always interesting when something a little different comes along. It’s for this reason that Circle Of Innocents stands out.

It’s evident from his prose that Curtis has a natural affinity for the Horror genre. He’s a vivid writer with a sharp eye for the poignancies of his characters which combined with his ability to craft a nail-biting plot rapidly draws his readers in.

Set in ordinary and realistic circumstances, with a villain who lives mostly in our minds Circle Of Innocents plays with our apprehensions. Having established the supernatural presence of The Puppeteer Curtis centres him firmly in the real world through the twisted and malleable character of Wayne Terry who readily embraces his fate in service to The Faithless.

Curtis develops his narrative quickly and convincingly. It never slips down into easy shock tactics. He writes plausible, literate dialogue and realistic settings. And the horror never seems, as it does in lesser horror novels, to feel at home with the surprises become too mechanical and inevitable.

Circle Of Innocents could have fallen into a cynical blend of two kinds of thrillers — police and supernatural — but Curtis wisely avoids this. Chris has a radiant decency and this makes him the perfect protector for Joanne as the relationship between Samantha and Andy sets the reader up for a clever and unpredictable twist.

These reasons alone are enough to pick up a copy and start reading but the real gem in Circle Of Innocents is The Puppeteer who ultimately steals the show. With genuine panache, Curtis gets his persona just right with attention to detail, dialogue and subtleties of character that makes him utterly convincing and wholly terrifying!

“Circle Of Innocents” is a smashing debut and should be well-received by fans of the genre. With an ending that hints at more to come, it is highly recommended.
