The BookViral Review:
When it’s good, there is no more riveting fiction genre than a legal thriller, and Shaiken’s Automatic Stay is among the best you will read.
As with Shaiken’s “Fresh Start” it’s less about the destination than the journey, where the stakes have become so high that lives and corporations are potentially on the table.
There are plenty of legal thrillers which traipse down familiar corridors worn smooth by countless other novels about the law but Shaiken’s series is very particular in that the courtroom pyrotechnics and legal manoeuvres are equally matched by the ethical struggle. And as he clearly demonstrated in “Fresh Start” Shaiken has a knack for creating strong characters and situations that resonate with tension as he crafts excellent set-ups and payoffs.
Returning to centre stage is Josephina Jillian Jones, known to her friends as 3J, and once again we get a strong sense of the legal culture she inhabits. She has a quiet authority, projects a strong self-image and in the best tradition of legal thrillers of this sort she ticks all the right boxes on an intellectual, procedural and emotional level.
Drawing on a parade of colourful supporting characters Automatic Stay is coaxed along by Shaiken’s considerable skills as a brisk, methodical author who knows his subject inside out. He’s adept at suggesting unseen menace and keeping things in motion with key characters, Pascale, Judge Robertson, Aaronson and Phillip Dewey uniformly outstanding as he fuses suspense and a powerful plot to create a read that vibrates with energy and will keep readers on the edge of their seats throughout.
A legal thriller with a cutting-edge Automatic Stay proves a superb sequel to Fresh Start and is an unreservedly recommended five-star read!
