The BookViral Review:
One of the recurring criticisms levelled at short story anthologies is that it’s hard to lose oneself in the brevity of such short works, but Fryer turns brevity to his advantage and the satisfaction of his readers.
The genre thrives on authors who can quickly tap into our imagination and Fryer has it down to a fine art. Delivering sharp, intelligent and above all intriguing nuggets of short, but perfectly formed works of fiction by expanding upon a given moment, holding his characters and events up to scrutiny then moving on.
There’s no lyrical wandering with each story punching above its word count whilst unexpected moments of felicity encroach on the reader’s headspace and demand reflection.
With just fourteen stories in all, Fryer proves himself quite adept at evoking social nuance and has an unfailing eye for the tiniest detail that will shine a light on the whole. This is clearly evident in stories like The Lamp Shop, The Piano Made Its Way, Enough Is Enough and All This For A Bottle Of Wine and whilst they couldn’t be more different each one is eminently readable and a testament to the passion with which Fryer writes.
Short story anthologies prose can often feel empty and bereft of life but Fryer brings an emotionally charged sense of immediacy to his words which feel unerringly authentic.
A must-read for fans of short-form fiction Fryerworks is unreservedly recommended.
