A highly emotive and personal account, ‘Prayers and Po-boys’ tracks Larry Singleton’s battle with stage 4 Hodgkin Lymphoma, an invasive form of blood cancer. Whilst many write memoirs of traumatic life experiences, rarely are they as positive and uplifting as this inspiring account.
Singleton manages to draw his reader deep into his world as he moves between thoughts and feelings to remembered dialogue, reflecting not only his motivations and beliefs but the empathic personalities of those surrounding him; those in his family and in the health profession-particularly his wife, who sits behind as a figure of constant support.
With a conversational narrative and an easily readable pace, Singleton gently poses implicit questions about faith and positivity-in his case the power of prayer and the belief that sustenance, both spiritual and physical, could aid him in his battle both against cancer and the chemo that also wreaks havoc throughout the body.
The frankness of this memoir is refreshing in its honesty-not pussyfooting around the devastating impact of diagnoses and treatment, but nevertheless supportive in its stubborn message of hope and survival-and the ultimate goal-the claiming of the bell.
Nestled amongst the pages is the sure belief that sometimes people and circumstances are manoeuvred by a higher source to provide pivotal moments in times of need-these anecdotes are reaffirming, touching and strengthening in their message of optimism. Connected to this message are infrequent but telling passages from the scriptures which contain sentiments of hope and courage and promote reflection regarding the source of strength and recovery, along with wise words collected and treasured by the author along his road to recovery.
For Singleton, there was a happy ending-remission and a second chance at life surrounded by a loving family. Some may not be so lucky, but whatever the outcome, this gentle memoir soothes with empathy drawn from a shared experience. It is highly recommended!
