The BookViral Review:
Powerful and thought-provoking Corners Untouched by Madness: A Personal Journey of Overcoming Mental Illness proves a notable mental health memoir for Daniel and one that demands to be read.
Many of the most intense and personal portrayals of the human mind are captured in literature and yet very few authors get the details right. Too often, they tend towards stigmatizing or twisting mental health issues, making characters with a mental health condition seem different from everyone else which in turn leads to people who actually deal with them on a daily basis being ostracized.
Mental health is a hard subject to write about but Daniel guides us through the harrowing arc of how it must feel to lose one’s grip on reality whilst still remaining grounded. In the main, he achieves this by underplaying his narrative to ensure we never doubt the authenticity of his words. Conveying fear and paranoia through subtle shifts in the tone of his prose so the moments when he understandably snaps really stand out in contrast.
We are left in no doubt that Daniel’s world has dropped out from beneath him and it makes for a dark read at times but there is also light at the end of the tunnel and with that comes a sense of hope.
N Daniel states that his story is both a lesson in atonement and a heartfelt apology to those the author has hurt and he has certainly delivered on both counts. A must-read for anyone interested in mental health conditions or psychiatry it is highly recommended!
