The BookViral Review:
There are lots of okay books in the Military Thriller and Superhero genres, but for the majority, they are stories lacking coherent plots which you can read in pieces but they’re a puzzle that never gets solved. But in Heroic Measures, Joel Shulkin brings together the best of both genres to give us much more than this with plot threads that weave together to deliver a high-octane blend of action and intrigue where the momentum rarely lets up.
With plotting that is elegant and compelling it’s a shrewd, expansive and propulsive story that encompasses all the requisites of the Military Thriller and Superhero genres. Shulkin instinctively understands the devices of both genres and what it takes to stand out. From the quality and depth of his writing to literary values, he respects established tropes whilst delivering a story which is wholly original.
Whereas many military and superhero thrillers rely on stereotyping and crude motivations to move their stories along Shulkin has delivered an altogether more sophisticated read as enormous consequences hang by slender threads. He delivers a plot which is complex and yet is never less than clear to his readers. It’s first and foremost a Military Thriller in which the players are all smart enough that we can’t take their actions for granted. And on this level, Shulkin does a spellbinding job of cranking up the tension to create a convincing sense of realism.
His action scenes are propulsive with action and dialogue in perfectly balanced proportions which both enhances suspense and expresses his characters’ ever-changing relations to one another. Especially Stephen and Sharon as the extent to which their lives have been manipulated is revealed and events threaten to tear them apart.
A superb novel from Shulkin that’s a delight to read from beginning to end Heroic Measures is an unreservedly recommended Golden Quill read!

Whilst the issues of prejudice and discrimination are multi-faceted and complicated beyond belief, a key moment for me was the day I picked up ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. Harper Lee implicitly drilled down the relative unfairness of human existence into my 12-year-old brain, creating a sense of outrage that has stayed with me throughout my life.

Writing a good book takes individuality, creativity, and boundless imagination. Is this something we are born with, or can we develop and nurture a powerful imagination?
