Miracles Beyond the Crowd is not simply a devotional work, it’s a spiritual provocation. Throughout the book, Nico Smit urges readers to move from the safety of the familiar into the dangerous, beautiful terrain of persevering faith. From the opening assertion that “giving up is easy to do! Remaining steadfast in faith is hard!” to the closing call to live as “believing believers,” Smit constructs a message that is both urgent and pastoral, challenging and deeply compassionate.
A central strength of the book is its insistence that faith is not measured by tone, vocabulary, or theological polish but in visible movement. The earliest chapters establish this through the stories of the paralytic lowered through the roof and the woman who crawled through a hostile crowd, but Smit does not rely solely on early Gospel examples. Later chapters broaden the scope, showing how faith demands endurance not only in pursuit but in waiting, loss, and sticking with Jesus when it costs you everything.
In Chapter 6, Smit writes with pastoral directness about spiritual lethargy, warning that many believers “die before their time”—not physically, but spiritually—because they settle among the crowd rather than walk with Christ into uncomfortable obedience.
Later, in Chapter 7, he turns to the widow of Nain, highlighting how Jesus interrupts grief not only with compassion but with authority. Smit’s commentary here is especially insightful: he notes that the crowd “walked with her toward burial,” but only Jesus reversed direction. The observation reflects one of the book’s recurring themes: the crowd often escorts us into despair, but Christ leads us out of it.
Smit’s writing style deserves special mention. It is rhythmic, image-driven, often poetic, and intentionally repetitive in a way that feels more like preaching than prose. Sentences rise with urgency—“Faith doesn’t require certainty, but it does require surrender”—and then settle into quiet conviction. Moments of prophetic intensity are woven through the narrative, such as the extended vision in the Introduction where God invites the believer to “sit at My table” and declares that “giants are on the menu.”
These sections reveal Smit’s pastoral imagination and his intention not simply to teach but to impart courage.
Yet the book is not triumphantism dressed as theology. Smit acknowledges the reality of exhaustion and disappointment. In Chapter 8, “Sticking With Jesus,” he explores the disciples in John 6 who walked away when the teaching became hard, pointing out that “many love proximity to Jesus, but few love the demands of staying.” Peter’s declaration—“Lord, to whom shall we go?”—becomes, in Smit’s hands, a portrait of gritty faith rather than romantic devotion.
The book’s emotional climax arrives in the closing pages, where Smit writes: “Crowds block, Jesus builds paths.” It’s a simple line, but it encapsulates the message of the entire work: that the obstacle is rarely God’s reluctance, but our willingness to move toward Him.
By the end, Miracles Beyond the Crowd proves itself to be more than a collection of sermons. It is a sustained argument against passive Christianity and a celebration of the faith that crawls, climbs, tears roofs open, endures loss, survives silence, and keeps walking even when clarity has not yet come. Smit’s message is clear: Jesus still stops for the ones who step beyond the crowd. And his writing—fierce, tender, prophetic, and deeply rooted in Scripture—makes that truth feel both possible and urgent.
