The BookViral Review:
An intriguing, fast-paced mystery, which continues unfolding, ‘The Ring’ marries the past with the present in an engaging, though not heavy, read.
With its interweaving circular narratives, Dieters confidently juggles multiple plot threads as widely differing characters converge in a fascinating flowering of personalities and emotion. From the bombastic Senator Thad Widman and the shifty Rodney to the gentler Ruby, Dieters plausibly crafts their drives and motivations, as each moves abrasively against the next.
Whilst not lingering in extraneous detail, Dieters successfully conveys a full complement of emotions, using pathetic fallacy and sensory imagery to intensify his players, as they evolve against a highly charged background and a believable historical backstory.
Bringing his readers from the lowly slave trade to the dizzy heights of the modern-day high ranking political world, the plot thickens and stretches, keeping the reader on a teetering knife edge as his characters run blindly and precariously into danger. Each scene shifting in perspective in response to family, moral and social dynamics whilst pausing sensitively at times to explore the fragilities of love and life.
Choc-a block full of power struggles which span the wide divide between class, success and morality, Dieters expertly deals with serious issues such as institutional racism, white supremacy, personal vendetta and political corruption and control. Most importantly, he does this whilst keeping true to ‘The Rings’ ever-present thread of mystery as convincing commentary surrounding the dual influences of politics and media lay the groundwork for a heightened sense of terror.
However, Dieters does not shy away from tragedy. Not all of the good triumph; neither do all of the bad receive their comeuppance. Nevertheless, one is left with a residual feeling that justice has been accomplished.
Packed full of drama and intrigue, and the thrill of the chase, ‘The Ring’ is a sharp and compelling read.
