The BookViral Review:
A cool as you like, entertainingly dark suspense thriller The Ridders will have genre fans grinning from ear to ear with Towles keeping her readers so focused on what the left hand is doing that they may well miss what’s happening with the right!
Suspense Thrillers more often than not seem to be too mechanical – a rehash of genre tropes is rarely an emotionally satisfying one – but The Ridders reminds us of a time when readers could still be surprised before the genre devolved into a corny parody of itself with Towles owning the ability to surprise and shock throughout.
With its intricate plot, it demands a slow read but what makes The Ridders a cut above the usual genre fare isn’t its complexity but the fact Towles has managed to rig her plot without the usual genre corn.
Paring her story and characters down to their barest essentials, Towles certainly delivers the goods for readers who like smart takes on life-or-death adventure with an ensemble of characters that are perfectly cast (increasingly something of a rarity these days) with superb plot twists and clever setups excitingly employed.
Narrated by Brock “BJ” Janoff who together with his older brother Jonas runs a private investigation firm in Venice, CA, Towles’ narrative is faultless but The Ridders is not just about narrative it’s about style and here Towles’ snappy on point dialogue internalizes “BJ’s” perspective with no time for plot drift or the distraction of trite tropes and tired clichés.
With The Ridders rapidly building narrative momentum Towles certainly doesn’t skimp on the shocks or intrigue. It’s clearly one of her fortes. Every scene contributes as The Ridders marches from page to page providing readers with vivid snapshots as events unfold but with it, Towles is sure to capture the deeper human echoes of her characters as we head towards what proves to be a cracking ending to an uncommonly absorbing novel.
An exceptional read and a fine introduction to other titles from Towles The Ridders is a must-read for fans of Suspense Thrillers and is recommended without reservation!
