The BookViral Review:
For the most part, many of the newest releases in military science fiction merely flit over their cornucopia of SF concepts. But seeking to use rather than explore them, Lancaster gives us something highly original with Deep Range providing his readers with a genre familiar read without the clichés!
Furthermore, the quality and quantity of detail in his story’s setting and the level of imagined technology are superb with Deep Range providing solid escapist entertainment and powerful social commentary as Lancaster explores the social structure of his imagined future whilst delving into the possibilities and implications of far-out technological concepts. Both seamlessly and credibly integrated into the fictional universe of Deep Range and made to seem commonplace which is what the very best SF does.
Readers don’t care about a story if it doesn’t care about its characters, and Deep Range’s characters definitely elicit this emotional investment. The plot is superbly structured to maximize its emotional impact and the dialogue between Lancaster’s characters is always spot on.
He doesn’t overwhelm us with too many characters and subplots with his narrative being tonally consistent. Leaning towards a dark ultra-violent Science Fiction action thriller – which is when it’s at its best with Lancaster giving us vivid and gripping scenes that linger in the imagination.
The way Deep Range reveals its secrets, themes, and connections is one of its greatest strengths. Lancaster doesn’t give us all the answers, allowing readers to reflect on their trajectories. But the question that dominates throughout is what it means to be free—to have free thought and the ability to choose the direction of one’s life.
An exceptional debut from a talented author with the promise of more to come Deep Range is an unreservedly recommended five star read!
