The BookViral Review:

Readers who don’t like The Festival of Hungry Ghosts may need their pulse checked… Because it’s the kind of read that comes along once in a blue moon and will make you forget yourself right through to the end.

A deliriously funny, darkly disturbing and crazily original read the plot evolves from the arrival of The Big Bad Wolf in the real world where he becomes a private eye! A hard-drinking, wise-cracking loner hero, as plots go, this one will be familiar to anyone who has ever read hard-boiled noir crime fiction and you should take it for granted that Frame has the genre’s distinctive tone down to a fine art.

For those who take a less studious and more visceral approach to their reading, it should also be noted that The Festival of Hungry Ghosts is not only Paranormal & Urban Fantasy at its best but a superior thriller – one that will keep its readers involved and “in the moment” until the final, wistful scene has concluded.

Frame has a gift for creating bizarre and eccentric characters, along with a superb ear for dialogue and the main strength of The Festival of Hungry Ghosts is in the incomparable characters of BB Wolf and Daiyu (“a chaotic female gangster who likes dames, booze, and bullets”). Wonderfully vivid characters they hold the reader’s rapt attention through bloody shootouts and a rapid-fire delivery of throwaway gags and one-liners as Frame finds the right note for their burgeoning, albeit quirky, partnership. Added to this are a host of powerful auxiliary characters that include the likes of Daji, Wen, Chang-Chang and Mr Feng, who together create a rich tapestry of players that are hard to forget.

We know the requirements of the Paranormal & Urban Fantasy genres thrive on the struggle between good and evil, with the best novels working because readers feel fully invested in the fate of their characters and this is something Frame achieves with consummate ease. He certainly doesn’t skimp on the shocks or action. It’s one of his fortes. Every action scene contributes, and The Festival of Hungry Ghosts rapidly builds momentum as it marches from page to page with vivid action snapshots. More importantly, he’s careful to balance the genre’s requisite shocks with scenes that set up the emotional stakes for his key characters with some sensational double crosses along the way!

A standout read for the imagination to linger on The Festival of Hungry Ghosts proves a corker of a novel and is an unreservedly recommended Golden Quill read!
