The BookViral Review:

Psychological Paranormal Thriller with an exciting blend of melodrama and the supernatural Finding Paige makes a notable fiction debut for Renee Scarrott who mines our fears to deliver a gem of a read. At its core, Finding Paige is a story about loss and the need for closure. And for Olivia and Luke, it leads them back to Gainesville and into the heart of darkness where nothing is what it first appears to be.

Both narratively and stylistically Scarrott creates meaningful conflict, believable characters and emotional honesty that brings her characters to life. We never feel that Olivia and Luke are immersed in a cycle of fake melodrama and brainless coincidences that sadly litter the genre. The plot proves refreshingly unpredictable as Olivia finds herself frustrated by the secrets Luke is keeping. And we are kept on tenterhooks as she tries to figure out the right direction to take.

Olivia isn’t a stereotypical character who wears her angst on her sleeve. Her self-esteem keeps her centred. She’s smart and selfless. A reminder that one of the pleasures of reading a novel like Finding Paige is restoring our faith in people who genuinely care about us.

Notwithstanding an excellent ensemble of supporting characters, Finding Paige is very much Olivia’s tale with Scarrott giving her an intriguingly dark backstory. This not only allows for an insightful exploration of the dynamics between Olivia and Luke but draws out the supernatural elements of her story and allows us to delve into the nefarious intentions of the Disciples of the Rising Phoenix.

On this level, Scarrott is clearly aware of the genre’s tropes and she uses them well. Violence and abduction are often included in Psychological Thrillers for the shock factor alone, but here Scarrott uses it to explore her main characters, not only in the present, but through the subterfuge they’ve established in the past.

An enjoyable debut from Scarrott Finding Paige is a must read for fans of Psychological Thrillers and is strongly recommended.
