The BookViral Review:

Tense, captivating, disturbing and psychologically rich When Things Fall Apart proves a classy and edgy thriller with Brenham keeping the stylistic pyrotechnics of the genre to a refreshing minimum.

Thrillers and crime fiction are by necessity plot-driven and writing a good police procedural, thriller or suspense novel isn’t easy. New authors often find themselves juggling so many plot threads that they become irrevocably tangled but Brenham isn’t a new author. He knows his genre inside out and When Things Fall Apart is one of those novels where you’ll want to savour the fine detail.

A sure sign of a bestseller the forward momentum is relentless as Kit Hanover finds herself drawn into a web of lies and misdirection with Brenham adept at revealing the motivations and emotions of his characters. Doing this through well-conceived backstories and nicely nuanced dialogue that’s devoid of cheesy clichés he dives below the ordered surface of the genre into the coldest waters of the individual soul.

Far too many recent thrillers are so concerned with technology that the human characters are almost in the way. We get gun battles and car chases that we don’t care about, because we don’t know the people firing the guns or driving the cars. Brenham wants us to know his characters and he does this with vivid descriptions and a narrative that eschews twists on top of twists in favour of a well-conceived plot without the frustration of clumsy loose ends.

On this level When Things Fall Apart is every bit as textured as Brenham’s previous releases and spins along on the anxieties of its characters with a stratum of evil underlying the whole book. Kit Hanover is the target of a killer who has murdered her father. A killer who is unable to establish normal relationships but hides in plain sight and Brenham does well to keep the killer’s reveal to the closing chapters.

A hypnotically engrossing thriller that’s sure to keep you on edge from beginning to end When Things Fall Apart is an unreservedly recommended Golden Quill read.
