The BookViral Review:
An epic tale of intrigue and action Jay Thomas proves to have an amazing imagination and you know from the very first page that The Unifier is something rather special.
Few fantasy writers demonstrate Thomas’ narrative range and The Unifier packs in impressive world-building, superb characterization and original magical constructs in a novel little over 300 pages long as Thomas reminds us why the Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction genre remains unerringly popular.
With the eponymous “Unifier” Lucian at the centre of events, Thomas’ plot is labyrinthine, with twists and turns and reversals of fortune whilst battle scenes are rendered with graphic realism and tangible feelings of tension.
Clearly, character development is Thomas’ forte and the relationships between his key characters are deeply explored and intelligently conveyed. But without the need for overwrought sentimentality as he expertly reveals characters flawed by circumstances beyond their control. This is certainly true of Lucian but extends to others like Hroggar, Amara, Cynamaer and Darius to give us an impressive sense of perspective.
At first glance, you might be forgiven for thinking The Unifier is a classically clichéd good versus evil Post-Apocalyptic read but the notion itself is subversive and the real story here is one of destiny and fortitude on a heroic scale as Thomas tantalisingly peels back the veneer on The Unifier’s prophecy to establish an effective narrative rhythm to his chapters and give his readers something wholly original in which to immerse themselves.
Culminating in a powerful and rousing finale that sets the scene for a second volume. The Unifier is 5 stars read for discerning fans of the genre and is recommended without reservation.
