The BookViral Review:
Matthew Marullo’s Welcome to Opine is a blisteringly intelligent, darkly humorous, and deeply provocative novel that merges satire, speculative fiction, and political allegory to deliver a scathing critique of modern society—by imagining a utopian future that feels eerily dystopian beneath the surface.
Set on the planet Opine, which was once Earth, the story unfolds in a post-human civilization rebuilt millennia after humanity’s self-destruction. At the heart of Opine lies “The Find,” a quantum archive of humanity’s greatest accomplishments—and most damning failures. This treasure trove becomes the foundation upon which the new human society, the “Opinions,” constructs a world of peace, equality, and universal “Contentment.” Yet, as Marullo demonstrates with unsettling precision, peace often has a price.
The book’s genius lies in its seriocomic tone. Scenes of children performing historical morality plays, complete with fake blood and vegan strawberry-flavored gore, veer from hilarious to horrifying in seconds. Marullo’s prose brims with irony, often making readers laugh and wince simultaneously. In Opine, schoolteachers regurgitate sanitized history—literally, since vomiting is a normalized physiological side effect of gene editing. This is world-building at its most absurd and chilling.
Underneath its pastel utopia, Welcome to Opine questions the cost of engineered harmony. The Opinions have genetically altered themselves to eliminate selfishness and aggression, but with it, they’ve also relinquished sexual desire and perhaps something essential about human nature. Democracy has been reimagined as rotating jury duty; capitalism has been replaced by hyper-altruistic crowd-funding; and individual passion is subordinated to collective rationalism.
The satire is razor-sharp. Marullo doesn’t merely lampoon ancient bigotry, violence, and hypocrisy—he interrogates our reliance on technology, our worship of consumption, and our search for meaning in a universe without inherent purpose. The Opinions’ ideal world, built on the debris of our own, is meticulously fair but disturbingly inert. Their laughter—ever-present, ever-prescribed—masks a society sterilized of conflict and, perhaps, of choice.
Marullo’s command of language is impressive, blending the academic with the absurd, the poetic with the profane. The characters are symbolic, yet vibrantly rendered, especially young Aster Bottlebrush and his charming, intellectually precocious peers, who echo our own children’s future—but in a funhouse mirror.
Verdict: Welcome to Opine is not just a novel—it’s a philosophical thought experiment disguised as satire. For readers who appreciate the dystopian wit of Vonnegut, the philosophical inquiry of Huxley, or the societal skewering of Orwell, this book is a must-read. Unflinching, weird, and wildly original, it forces us to reconsider what it means to be truly human—and whether perfection is worth the price of our flaws.
A brilliant speculative satire that’s as unnerving as it is enlightening Welcome To Opine is an unreservedly recommended Golden Quill read.
