The BookViral Review:

Impressively imaginative, with its explosive plot and the scope of Eric Miltner’s vision Accretion proves to be a brilliant start to a Science Fiction Fantasy epic series.

Despite the vast number of novels generated by the genre it is never the less rare to find such a complex and well-built world with Accretion thriving by keeping its world-building constantly on the edge of creeping dread as events unfold.

Continuously captivating it offers glimpses of the essence of each character as it navigates uncharted genre territory, keeping readers delightfully uncertain whilst tying together personal stakes and planetary history in a way that sci-fi aficionados will no doubt enjoy. It’s dense and full of ramifications with Miltner creating an historical feel that plays to the side of more cerebral science fiction.

Whilst never ponderous Accretion does take itself very seriously indeed and has much to say about the corrupting nature of power, the inevitability of imperial decay, and humanity’s unwillingness to face unpalatable truths even to mitigate them.

Finding a good balance between plot and individual character stories that make the macro elements of Accretion more meaningful Miltner certainly delivers on the promise of an epic story encompassing a highly original magical order with compelling character drama.

With every chapter giving the impression that we’re following events with huge consequences for the Praxiats and the Esoptrian Council Accretion still finds time to be intimate as it concentrates on individual characters. In the main, this falls to Runa and Talin. Both of them are fantastic characters with the emotional core of their character journeys and the weight each of them carries because of their association with Adanon intimately explored. And here the often boring, played-out tropes of sci-fi revolution stories are subverted in favour of something gentler and more humanistic. Adanon is a joy to learn about as more of his backstory is revealed, and as he reckons with the consequences his actions have on his young Praxiat charges.

Filled with profoundly memorable emotional hooks Accretion proves a superb start to Miltner’s series and is an unreservedly recommended Golden Quill read.
