The BookViral Review:
A bracing Science Fiction Adventure Aian D. Grey introduces us to a near future where the chaotic effects of climate change have taken their toll on the planet with dire ecological consequences.
Aian D. Grey figures that corporate greed and excessive global consumption will be the defining influence over society’s ultimate future and it’s this thinking that underpins EMA. This creates a plausible vision of the future and the science fiction makes for an intriguing plot without getting in the way of a focused story.
EMA is the artificial intelligence designed to monitor and control the ecological consequences of catastrophic climate change and its creator is tech billionaire Minsky. A character who is both revered and hated with an ‘explosive’ opening chapter setting the stage for the events that follow.
There is a tendency with novels like EMA to bombard the reader with future technology, plot threads, and characters to the point that no single one stands and Aian D. Grey appears cognizant of this. With its succinct cast of strong characters like Jason and Lidia EMA never loses its way when highlighting potential world-altering events and its projection of how we might interface with the Metaverse in the near future seems tantalizingly real. A Metaverse where the real world merges with the virtual world and our digital selves become extensions of us.
Far too many novels released in the SF genre aren’t true science fiction, because they fail to explore ideas in a sustained, conscientious way. They don’t extrapolate where we are and where we might be headed, and what it might mean for the future of the human race. And here, EMA warns us about the perils of AI playing God and gives its readers much to think about.
A short but finely tuned science fiction adventure with cleverly orchestrated twists EMA proves a first-rate read and is highly recommended.
