The BookViral Review:
A novel that packs a solid entertainment punch The Path of a Titan: The Proving ought to have readers standing up and cheering as Bennett takes us through the doors of a military academy like no other!
Military Science Fiction is a genre where familiarity has become endemic with successive authors seemingly content to regurgitate tired genre tropes and it’s refreshing to find something as original as Bennett’s debut offering. Particularly when it comes to fighting scenes where The Path of a Titan is the real deal!
Bennett isn’t an author to give us nonsensible action that’s thrown together with staccato dialogue to disguise a lack of spatial continuity. He slows it down just enough so that we can actually perceive it, and it makes sense without compromising the thrust of his narrative.
But The Path of a Titan is not all about the action and drama enters in the person of Carson, a smart, tough and resilient teen who, like his sister Kylie has lost everything and has nothing to lose as he enters the Tournament Of Titans. A brutal contest where even children fight and bleed and the stakes are incredibly high.
If Bennett’s novel had solely been about the action it might have quickly lost its appeal and he avoids this by giving us characters who matter. There’s no corny dialogue or creaky plot threads and he’s clearly given careful thought to the economies of survival and the savagery that marks ‘The Proving’ as he drills down into the psyche of his characters. This not only gives them impressive gravity and presence but allows Bennet to explore the social anthropology of his imagined world.
With its crisp, taut and involving plot The Path Of A Titan: The Proving proves a genuine page-turner and one that promises more good things to come in Bennett’s “Path Of The Titan” series. A five star read it is unreservedly recommended!
