The BookViral Review:

Compelling and addictive reading “In Silence Cries the Heart” catapults us back to 17th-century Scotland with a story full to the brim with inner turmoil as we plunge impetuously into a tragic and passionate exploration of love inspired by the true story of Domhnull Donn and Mary Grant.

Far too many Historical Romance novels revolve around plots stretched beyond believable limits to keep the narrative going; introducing surprises because an author hasn’t figured out what to fill the empty space with. Hughes isn’t one of those and gives her readers a refreshingly satisfying payoff as she explores the foundations of love, the dictates of duty, superstition and the ever-resounding echo of hope as the dark and haunting story of Mary and Donal unfolds. With plenty of momentum, there’s riveting attention to detail that creates an overall sense of suspense and an authentic feel to her Castle Undlay and Lochness settings as she pulls readers into an ever-immersive storyline and an intricate tapestry of events.

Hughes writes with a rawness only offset by the complete honesty in which she portrays desire, intention and action; holding nothing back, but instead taking her readers deep into the minds of her fated lovers as they orbit one another with devastating results. She certainly has a knack for creating characters with real gravitas and here her principal characters of Mary, Donal and George are highly memorable and well-conceived as she vividly brings them to life.

They are not stereotypical personalities, Mary is a headstrong and determined young woman. Donal is a man whose resilient Highland heritage, belief in honour and poetic verses make him a figure to cheer for whilst the weak-willed and lecherous George is perfectly crafted as their nemesis. Together they are a fine example of what can happen when good writing and extensive research come together as they assume a living and breathing life of their own.

There’s action, danger, nail-biting escapades and shadowy characters with dubious morals and though readers will find themselves hoping against the odds for a happy ending Hughes doesn’t give the game away and ably manages to keep readers on tenterhooks to her closing chapters, with a refreshing absence of loose ends.

A rousing Historical Romance and a delightfully confident novel from Hughes In Silence Cries the Heart proves a powerful debut and is highly recommended.

Writing About Religion – The Good & The Bad
