The BookViral Review:
Disturbing and suspenseful from the very start, Crimson Waters is the second release from author Jacob Parr who does well to distinguish his writing from the surfeit of horror fiction currently doing the rounds.
A read that radiates malevolence, Parr takes his readers on a harrowing journey, underpinned by an intriguing plot. Building his fictional town and characters with a meticulous eye for the nuances of camaraderie, this is much more than a trite horror fest.
A novel like “Crimson Waters” can easily become dumb and goofy with much hinging on the author’s imagination and here Parr manages to create a seductive yet somehow sinister lakeside atmosphere with an enveloping presence which in turn grounds the tension to keep readers on edge. Whilst with taut prose and a notable sense of timing, he blunts the edge of predictability by delivering nail-biting scenes and opportune surprises that make for a highly imaginative and well-executed narrative.
Avoiding the curse of trite clichés to deliver a refreshingly original plot Crimson Waters benefits from nicely nuanced characters who work well within the confines of Parr’s plot and help keep them grounded in the realm of plausibility. An eclectic mix they have both a benevolence and darkness to them as he pits them against our most primitive fears and superstitions to create an addictive convention of supernatural menace but without covering the prerequisites of top-shelf nastiness that contemporary horror fiction requires.
A disarmingly dark and entertaining read, Crimson Waters is sure to be well-received by fans of horror and supernatural fiction. It is highly recommended!
