“Deep Darkness” by A. A. Akibibi is an engaging and thrilling novel that blends science fiction with a coming-of-age story. The narrative follows Sean, a young boy aboard the scientific exploration vessel Aurora, navigating the complexities of space, loss, and self-discovery.
The story begins with Sean dreaming about winning the World Stratagem Finals, symbolically representing his yearning for achievement and recognition. However, reality soon sets in as he wakes up on the Aurora, a ship exploring a peculiar region of space with strange gravitational anomalies and tulip-shaped aliens. The juxtaposition of his dreams and the harsh realities of space exploration is a recurring theme that adds depth to Sean’s character and the overall narrative.
The setting of the Aurora, with its cramped quarters and the vast, mysterious expanse of space outside, creates a sense of isolation and confinement. This atmosphere is heightened by the ship’s encounters with bizarre phenomena, such as rainbow-coloured light and reversed gravity, which keeps the reader intrigued and on edge.
Sean is a well-crafted protagonist whose journey from naivety to maturity is both relatable and inspiring. His interactions with the other crew members, particularly Waph and Kartak, showcase his growth and the development of his problem-solving skills. The supporting characters, including the stern Captain Sharta, the eccentric Wiggs, and Sean’s ever-reliable father, are well-drawn and contribute significantly to the story’s progression whilst the Sloth Bears Sean encounters and Rafiki introduce an intriguing alien element to the story.

Sean’s determination to help the crew survive despite the numerous challenges they face highlights the theme of perseverance with his passion for Stratagem offering a timely solution when it is most needed! The novel also touches on the impact of loss, with the death of Roberts, and how it shapes one’s identity and outlook on life.
Akibibi’s writing is engaging and accessible, with a good balance of dialogue and descriptive passages. He excels in creating vivid imagery, particularly in scenes involving the strange phenomena encountered by the Aurora.
