The BookViral Review:

Ben Wolf has seen what loss does. He’s seen the darkness it manifests but he’s never faced loss himself until now when Lafferty’s A Place Of Vengeance finds him confronting unimaginable terror.

Like his first release in the Tales from Windward Cove series Lafferty’s A Place Of Vengeance isn’t one of those read-and-forget novels with a shelf life as short as its reader’s attention span. There’s real craft and ingenuity behind Lafferty’s narrative underpinned by an eclectic mix of authentic characters whom readers will quickly come to care about.

In the main, their backstories were established in A Place Of Shadows but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few more surprises in store with Lafferty creating meaningful conflict and the requisite degree of emotional honesty that brings them vividly to life.

Ben Wolf isn’t another stereotyped product of the supernatural production line with a tacked-on crisis. His story does more than thrill, frighten, and captivate; it sends the imagination into overdrive, reminding us of everything the genre should be. A harrowing story of unthinkable tragedy anchored in the realms of the supernatural with a narrative steeped in a brooding atmosphere of psychological suspense.

To this end, there’s an omnipresent sense of menace lurking in the shadows of each chapter as a string of grizzly and unexplained accidents escalate and the stakes rise ever higher as Ben and Ab find themselves investigating the power of a gypsy’s curse. Only to find themselves facing something infinitely more darker and malevolent!

Lafferty knows how to write memorable supernatural stories. Not manufactured ones made up from the recycled plots of other best sellers. Hi writes novels in which the horror, quite literally in the case of Gina, grows out from the characters themselves. But the horror takes on new meaning when Ben’s girlfriend Kelly is crushed to death and we’re reminded that it’s only by addressing loss and grief that we learn to empathise with its pain and begin to heal.

A novel that will keep you on edge throughout A Place Of Vengeance proves a superb sequel to A Place of Shadows and is an unreservedly recommended Golden Quill read.
