The BookViral Review:
“TIME HAS DIED”, the media headlines screamed. In a single moment, the lever that kept life moving had somehow stopped turning.”
An intense and stimulating Dystopian thriller that fires on all cylinders, The Bystander is one of those novels that promises much and still gives you more. With Wolden bending its offbeat plot into so many clever and well-conceived twists that readers actually have to pay attention to appreciate its progression and enjoy the multiple payoffs at the end.
Notably, Wolden manages to avoid trite narrative flaws that mar other time themed novels to deliver a thought-provoking and powerful over-arching conflict. And in the main, he achieves this by keeping his readers off-guard with nonlinear plot threads that comfortably sidestep the curse of predictability with this supported by superb character development.
Giving us characters like Samus, Grey, Jaydon and Novem we quickly come to grips with who they are and what their lives are like with Wolden demonstrating a fine ear for everyday dialogue that in turn makes his characters seem real and plausible in just a few brief words.
Avoiding the curse of cliché his characters are uniformly strong with their identities pivoting on their successes and failures which in turn justifies an intriguing array of coincidences and surprises.
With the pace quick to build and readers guaranteed a cracking ending The Bystander is a must-read for fans of epic dystopian fiction and is recommended without hesitation!
