The BookViral Review:
Love poems have become increasingly grounded in pop culture and whilst the genre is populated with an unfailing degree of mediocrity Joseph Wood’s Dawn Of Speech is not only beautifully written it has a quality that goes beyond sentimentality.
Wood adopts an unconventional approach to his poetic prose which he enters through invisible portals. Portals that lead us to reflect on the raw emotions of love as our hearts and minds find themselves torn in different directions. Whilst an assured simplicity underpins his poetic theme and amplifies the power of his words.
Through his poems, Wood establishes himself as a subtle observer of feelings with the ability to find the right tropes to express his themes but without coming across as overindulgent.
In part, this is down to the brevity of Wood’s poems. And yet as short as they are he nevertheless succeeds in capturing the complexity of love. The trials and tribulations, and the paths we invariably follow to find it.
Of particular note are the poems Draining Rain, Sleeping, Night Terrors and Sing Me To Sleep. Each one is incredibly intimate as they delve into the often paradoxical nature of our feelings to offer us much by way of reflection.
A short but highly memorable collection of poetry that introduces us to a notable new poet, Dawn Of Speech is strongly recommended.
