The BookViral Review: Genre – Low Fantasy

With an Isle victory and Gendrick Caelan on the throne. Val Arques a prisoner of the twisted sorceress Myranthe and Kael resurrected in Azenor’s body the scene is set for another superb instalment in Hartland’s Shadow Sword series. Progressively darker but with no less momentum than The 19th Bladesman this is Hartland at her best. Spinning us a dark fantasy narrative that is beautiful and moving, with a host of dynamic characters that will quickly find their place in the hearts and minds of her readers. Not least of all, Val as we come to learn his heart-wrenching backstory and Roaran as we come to learn of the events and dark magic that led to his becoming a Death Rider.

Faced with the harsh realities of his new body Kael’s story remains as powerful as it did in The 19th Bladesman whilst new characters like Dannon continue to add depth and intrigue to what has fast shaped up to be an epic fantasy series. Needless to say, the most loved devices of fantasy are to be found within Hartland’s tale, but it’s her ability to create evocatively imagined worlds that make this release so endearing. There is rich detail when the plot demands it, but never at the expense of pace, whilst an overarching air of mystery prevails throughout. Readers will love her description of the fire pits as Heath and Val finally come to cross swords!

A simply superb sword and sorcery novel with broad appeal, Hartland is destined to make her mark on this ever-popular genre and we have no hesitation in recommending The Last Seer King as an exceptional read.
