With the release of These Hands, Darcy Daniel does a remarkable job of capturing the tension and anxiety that comes with not only first love but being different whilst giving us an affecting evocation of a man who can literally give his life to save another.

Daniel is particularly good at finding the right balance between damaged hearts and longing for this material and as with her release Deceivious she steers away from trite tropes.

Novels like These Hands depend to a great degree on the narrative styles of their authors: If we don’t warm to their characters, and care about their feelings, then the plot is just more clanking and grinding of words in the vast number of interchangeable stories that populate the Romance genre. The difference between good and bad writing when it comes to Romance, and Magical Romance in particular, is that good authors convince us that the hearts of their characters are actually at risk and Daniel has this down to a fine art.

Although Lucas gets top billing, and deserves it, in a way These Hands belongs to Kelsey. She is always at the centre of Lucas’ thoughts as he struggles with the implications of his healing gift and his desire to reveal his true identity to her. Daniel tells their stories through alternating perspectives and in doing so she conveys a complex range of emotions, expectations and thoughts.

Grappling with disfigurement and the ability to survive lost love is more than enough for one novel and here Daniel resolutely refuses to let These Hands become just another cliched magical romance drama. The trajectory of their lives in their time apart has been shamefully unfair and the result is a story that’s heartwarming, heart-wrenching and a gut-wrenchingly wistful portrait of two people trying to find their way back to each other before it’s too late. 

With a tremendously powerful ending that may well pave the way for a sequel, These Hands is another super release from Darcy Daniel and unreservedly recommended!
